‘Mix It Up!’ is not only a great interactive book for young children, but also boosts children’s imagination and creativity. Usually, people think ‘Mix It Up!’ is a book that teaches color and art. Actually, the book provides opportunities for children to learn basic science concepts and data collection.
Here is a simple color mixing experiment we created based on the book. This experiment enables children to collect data on what happened when two different colors were mixed. Children record their data on a graphic chart.
Preparation:
Red, blue, and yellow liquid watercolor (or food coloring mix with water)
3 sets of test tubes ( or 9 containers which can hold the paint and allow children to mix)
1-3 eye dropper
Crayons
A graphic chart (see the attachment below)
Process:
1. Put the watercolor in test tubes of containers
2. Use eyedropper to do the color mixing experiment
3. Record the data
Albert Einstein once said “arts and sciences are branches of the same tree”. Children have a natural love of art. Let the children explore and learn new knowledge through play. For caregivers, we just need to take advantage of children’s interests, and provide opportunities and tools for children to learn and thrive.
