May 2021 Book Picks--Early Math Skills

Just like Rome was not built in a day, Children’s interests in math and skills in math are accumulated by long term stimulation and practice. Today , we are going to talk about some books that help children practice early math skills.


Books about Counting:

Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly Bang. It is a simple counting book to read before bedtime. Children will find the book being familiar because the content is very similar to most children’s daily life.

One Mole Digging a Hole by Julia Donaldson. Children will learn how to count from this colorful book. In addition, the book also presents some simple rhyming words for children to master.

Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews. Parents can use this book as a counting book. Or Parents can use this book to teach children simple math problems. For example four ones make 4. Or 3 and 1 make 4.

Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book by Yuyi Morales. A sentimental story to help children learn counting in both English and Spanish. In addition, children will learn some Mexican culture and family value from this book.

One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root. Another book which promotes both counting and rhyming.



Books about Shapes:

Squares by Yusuke Yonezu; Color Farm by Lois Ehlert; Bear in a square by Stella Blackstone. All of these books are very colorful and interactive. Hence, young children can learn both colors and shapes from these books without getting bored.

Square by Mac Barnett; Circle by Mac Barnett; Triangle by Mac Barnett. The stories are a little bit silly. However, it's easy for children to learn the shapes from the silly characters.

Round Is a Tortilla: A Book of Shapes by Roseanne Thong. Can you find a round/square/rectangle/triangle thing in your life? This book inspires children to find shapes from daily life. Shapes are everywhere. All we need is a pair of observant eyes.

Shapes with Little Fish by Lucy Cousins. First of all, this book teaches children some basic shapes. Children have the opportunity to test their knowledge right after they learn a shape in the book. Second, children can practice early writing skills from this book. When children trace the shapes along the lines, they learn how to write and draw.




Books about Colors:

My Very First Book of Colors by Eric Carle. It’s a very interactive book for young children to learn colors. Children can play the matching game while learning colors.

Hide and Seek, Little Chameleon by Anita Bijsterbosch. Another interactive book for children to learn colors. In addition, children will practice counting in this book as well.

Wow! Said the Owl by Tim Hopgood. For the first time, the little owl got the chance to see so many different colors. Children not only learn colors, but also learn how to appreciate our beautiful nature from the book.

Mouse Paint by Ellen Walsh; Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni. These books inspire children to mix up colors and create some new colors. Children learn from experimenting. General Math:

Seven Golden Rings A Tale of Music and Math by Rajani LaRocca. This book suits older children who are 4 years and older. It introduced simple addition and the binary system . However, the essence of the book is to teach children to think in a creative way to solve problems.

Two of Everything by Lily Toy Tang. This is a book for older kids who are 6 years and older to practice double addition facts. Two of everything can be explained as both 5+5 and 5*2=10. Based on this book, parents can ask children questions like if we put 2 cookies in the pot, how many will come out?

The Last Marshmallow by Grace Lin. The most effective way to teach children math is using real life examples. This book used a simple real life example to help children understand complicated math problems.

Baby Goes to Market by Atinuke. This book not only reinforces the counting practices for young children, but also introduces the concept of subtraction. Children will understand subtraction means taking out something from a group of something from the story.

Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni; The Napping House by Audrey Wood. Lia & Luis: Who Has More? by Ana Crespo. All of these books introduced the topic of measuring. What can we use to measure an object? In real life, we can measure things by using objects like rocks, cubes, or links. We can also measure things by using measuring tapes, rulers, scales or other measuring tools. Children learn comparison through measuring activities.

Press Here, Say Zoop, and Let's Play by Herve Tullet. Herve Tullet used his creative minds to present the correlation between math and art to young readers in his book collection. Young children will learn colors, practice basic math skills, and gain some early writing skills from Herve Tullet’s books.
