How does an artist write children’s books? Does she draw? Does she paint? Does she cut or paste a bunch of things onto a board? Yes! She does all of them. Today we are going to talk about an artist / children’s book writer--Lois Ehlert. Lois Ehlert’s books usually ignite young children’s creativity and imagination. Her “playful” collage techniques smartly enable the words and pictures to dance together. The unique part about her being a children’s books writer is that she presents a different art technique in each of her books and is still able to give a lesson in a fun way.
For example, in the book ‘Snowballs’, Lois Ehlert manipulated different materials and textures in her household to create a snow family. Children can build a vocabulary of household items while reading the book. In addition, Caregivers can collect a variety of items for children to build their own snow families.
Similarly, in the book ‘Leaf Man’, Lois Ehlert used an assortment of leaves to create a story about a leafman. This book inspires children to create stories with small objects in life. Caregivers can have a nature scavenger with their children. Caregivers can encourage children to collect some leaves, seed pods, or flowers to create stories or characters.
Moreover, Lois Ehlert’s books are not limited to art. Some of her books teach young readers some early math skills. Children will learn various shapes in an interactive way when reading ‘Color Zoo / Color Farm’. And in the book ‘Fish Eyes’, children will have the opportunity to learn counting, simple addition, and patterns.
Read some Lois Ehlert’s books this month. And tell us if you like her book, and which one is your favorite. By the way, she is the illustrator of the famous ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ as well.
